Parents often ask us how best to prepare their young children for their first dental visit. As a parent, it is exciting to watch your child experience all of their “firsts,” although certain things, like going to the dentist, require preparation to ensure a smooth experience for your child.
Therefore, we encourage parents to properly prepare their children for their first visit by following our tips below
- Bring your child to our office for a “meet and greet” experience. This helps your child feel more comfortable with us at subsequent visits.
- Read books to your child about going to the dentist.
- Speak only positive remarks about your own experience at the dentist.
- Roleplay by brushing your child’s teeth and explaining what happens during the dental exam.
- Teach your child about good oral hygiene either from books, songs, or other ways that will resonate with them.
What to Expect During the First Visit
Knowing what to expect can help calm your child’s anxiety or fears toward going to the dentist. Here’s what to expect during their first visit.
Dr. Mohler examines your child’s teeth and gums. Digital x-rays may be taken to assess the development of your child’s permanent teeth. Dr. Mohler may also evaluate your child for any adverse effects from prolonged thumb sucking or bottle usage. We will brush and clean your child’s teeth during their visit. Dr. Mohler recommends children use fluoridated toothpaste as long as they are old enough to spit because they should not ingest fluoride. Additionally, we will review with you how to thoroughly clean your child’s teeth and provide some helpful tips on encouraging good oral hygiene habits for your children. A subsequent dental checkup can be scheduled after your visit. If you have any concerns about your child’s oral health, we encourage you to speak with Dr. Mohler.
Preventing Cavities
Tooth decay is the number one disease in children in the U.S. However, it does not have to be this way. Preventive care goes a long way in preserving your child’s oral health and preventing cavities. Good oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of cavities, as do sealants. Dr. Mohler recommends sealants for children with emerged permanent molars. These adult teeth are subject to cavities on the chewing surface because bacteria lurk in these tiny crevices. Sealants are applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth and provide a protective barrier against oral bacteria, lowering your child’s risk of cavities in these specific areas of their teeth. Bonded directly to the tooth, sealants remain in place for many years, providing your child with good oral health for the long term.

- Stick to a meal schedule and limit snacks
