A dental crown is a custom dental restoration that fits over the entire tooth like a cap. The edges of the crown go all the way to the gum line, covering the whole tooth.
Who should get a dental crown?
If your tooth has sustained significant damage or is badly decayed, you might need a dental crown. Generally, the rule of thumb is if half or more of the tooth is compromised or the tooth is cracked significantly, the dentist may recommend a dental crown. In cases of moderate damage, an inlay or onlay may be the best solution.
How do you care for dental crowns?
Caring for dental crowns is simple. You brush and floss it daily, along with your other teeth. Take care to floss around the crowned tooth, thoroughly cleaning along the margins of the crown where bacteria tend to hide and build up. Neglecting these areas could result in bacteria harming the tooth structure along the gum line, which could cause tooth decay that compromises the crown.
How long do dental crowns last?
Crowns are quite durable and should last at least 10 years or longer. However, it is imperative that you maintain good oral hygiene to protect your crown, gum health, and underlying tooth structure. Additionally, avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or using your crowned front teeth as scissors.
How much do dental crowns cost?

The outer layer of dental crowns is made from high-quality porcelain that mimics the look of a real tooth. The porcelain is color-matched to your adjacent teeth, so it will blend and look natural.
What does it feel like to get a crown?
Unless the tooth has had a root canal, Dr. Mohler will numb the area first and then prepare the tooth for the crown. You should feel comfortable throughout your procedure. Afterward, your gum may be a little sore where you received the injection, and it is normal to experience slight tooth sensitivity to temperature changes or when biting. However, these sensations should subside within a few weeks. If not, please contact Dr. Mohler.
How long does it take to get a crown?
At Chris Mohler, DDS, we use an in-office CEREC machine to scan your prepared tooth and bite and mill the crown right here in our office. This means that Dr. Mohler preps your tooth, makes your crown, and completes the procedure all in one visit.
