Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head SC
If you avoid going to the dentist out of fear or anxiety, then sedation dentistry may be right for you. However, it is essential, as with any medical treatment, that you understand the scope of treatment. At Chris Mohler, DDS, we encourage our patients to play an active role in their dental health care, but sometimes patients are unsure what to ask or where to start. That is why we provided questions to ask your sedation dentist in Beaufort. This way, together with Dr. Mohler, you can decide if IV sedation is right for you.
What is IV sedation dentistry?
Intravenous or IV sedation dentistry involves using a tiny needle inserted into a vein in your arm to deliver sedation medication that lulls you to sleep during your appointment. IV sedation for dentistry in Beaufort is administered by our board-certified anesthesiologist that remains on-site and monitors your vitals throughout your appointment. You will be unconscious while under the effects of sedation and will likely have no memory of your procedure. Patients with extreme anxiety or fear of going to the dentist may be ideal candidates for sedation dentistry.
Will I need breathing assistance?
You will be “asleep” during your treatment, although you will be able to breathe on your own.
How should I prepare for my sedation appointment?
If you decide that sedation dentistry is right for you, Dr. Mohler will provide specific instructions for you to follow before your treatment. However, plan on wearing comfortable clothing to your appointment. You will be groggy afterward and will probably want to go home and rest. So plan on taking the remainder of the day off from your routine duties or work. We recommend that you avoid eating or drinking anything 6-8 hours prior to your appointment. Additionally, have a trusted individual drive you to and from your appointment. This person should also be able to remain on-site the entire time.
What happens afterward?
We will give post-op instructions to your driver and advise that you return home to rest. Plan on taking it easy for the remainder of the day.
For your safety and the safety of others, you should avoid the following for the first 24 hours:
- Heavy lifting
- Driving
- Operating machinery
- Taking unapproved medications
- Alcohol
- Strenuous activity
- Making major life decisions or signing important paperwork
Is sedation dentistry right for me?
Most healthy individuals with moderate to extreme dental anxiety are candidates for sedation dentistry. Ultimately, your candidacy depends on your health history. Therefore, we ask that you disclose your complete health history, a list of current medications you take, medical treatments you receive, or medical conditions that you may have to ensure the safety and effectiveness of your treatment. However, pregnant women are advised against receiving sedation dentistry, although regular dental treatments with a local anesthetic may be a better option.
